SMA was founded by Steve Maltzman (the “SM” in SMA). Steve was an industry leader turned CPA turned consultant who surrounded himself with the best talent available. Steve passed away suddenly in 2009. Our current team brings decades of direct homebuilding knowledge and experience to SMA.

It’s the early 1980’s. Our youngest staff today are not yet on the planet, but SMA founder Steve Maltzman, General manager Bob Whitten, and Sr. consultants Joe Stoddard and Mark Dunaway were already building houses or attending to the affairs of companies that did. Today, the entire principal SMA team have spent their adult working careers in some version of owning, operating, or providing Sr. Leadership for successful homebuilding operations including both public and privately held companies throughout the United States and Canada. SMA is now working with the adult children, and in some cases the grandchildren of the earliest SMA clients!

Gross profit is the most important metric in homebuilding. These % are reported bi-annually by SMA clients, and are reviewed through our rigorous consulting process. Results can of course be better or worse depending on geographic markets and other factors.

SMA’s client base is typically responsible for the construction of >6000 new homes annually. At an average selling price of $333,000 that amounts to $2 Billion of new home value.
